Shipping Butterflies

Your butterflies are shipped to arrive the day before your event.

  • We do not advise they be shipped to arrive the day of the event, in case they are late or lost in shipping.
  • For Sunday events, we suggest the butterflies arrive on Friday because if the butterflies are lost for a Saturday delivery, you will not receive them until Monday.
  • Some locations do not have a Saturday delivery.
  • If your butterfly release event is on a Tuesday you will be receiving your butterflies on the event date.

FEDEX does not currently ship on Sunday's. As a result, our code of ethics do not allow for living butterflies to sit in hot warehouse over the weekend. We will ship your butterflies on Monday, arriving to you on Tuesday by 10:30am in most areas.

Your shipping and tracking information allows you to track your shipment.
(estimated delivery time provided by FEDEX)

Each package contains detailed instructions on unpacking, temporary storage, care, release day details and more.
Any Questions please contact us @ 1-844-SEALED-1

Butterflies are shipped priority overnight mail on dry ice. This keeps them cool and calm during shipping to you.
(Care & Release instructions are below and included with each shipment)

Individual Releases

Butterfly_Envelopes_Sealed_Wish Individual Releases

An individual release simply means that each butterfly arrives in their own envelope.
It also is convenient when you desire them to be passed out to others for a group release.

Individual release is the most common choice, especially for events with a gathering of people such as weddings, funerals or other gatherings or celebrations.

Butterfly Arrival

As soon as your butterflies arrive, you want to confirm that the butterflies arrived safely. They are transported on dry ice to keep them cool and calm during transit.

Open the box.

  • Read the instructions. If you have any questions, please call us.
  • Take a few butterfly envelopes out (about 2 to 6 envelopes depending on how many in your shipment) and listen to the envelope for movement.

"Do not be alarmed if you do not hear any movement." Remember, your butterflies are cooled and they may not be moving.

If you hear no movement, gently open the envelope slightly. You will see their wings start to move indicating they are fine. Be sure to put them back on the dry ice until one hour before release. (Consider putting a fresh ice pack in the box)

What to do the day of your butterfly release

At least one hour before the release, remove the butterflies from the insulated box, off of the ice packs.
This will ensure they will be warmed up and ready to fly when opened.

Do Not place the butterflies in the sun or next to a heating unit. You do not want your butterflies to get too hot. Let the butterflies warm up naturally.

When passing them to others, information guests that there are live butterflies inside and they should hold gently.

Understanding the Metamorphosis Stages

The Beginnings

A Butterfly's transformation is something amazing.

It begins as a caterpillar crawling and eating leaves, Monarchs are usually found on milk weed which is their preferred food source.

During the larval stage, the caterpillar must consume enough to sustain itself through its pupal stage and into adulthood. Caterpillars can eat an enormous amount during a life cycle stages.

Cycle into Butterfly

When the caterpillar is fully grown, it makes a button of silk which it uses to fasten its body to a leaf or a twig.

Their exterior skin comes off, under this old skin is a hard skin called a "chrysalis" The chrysalis stage in most butterflies is one in which there is little movement.

Some butterflies pupae are capable of moving to produce sounds or scare away predators.

Butterfly Chrysalis

Within the chrysalis, growth and differentiation occur. Although this sudden and rapid change from pupa to imago is often called metamorphosis.

The pupal stage is found only in holometabolous insects, those that undergo a complete metamorphosis, with four life stages: egg, larva, pupa, and imago.

The processes of entering and completing the pupal stage are controlled by the insect's hormones, especially juvenile hormone, prothoracicotropic hormone, and ecdysone.

Transformation to Butterfly

The adult butterfly emerges from this and expands its wings by pumping haemolymph into the wing veins.

If you look closely at the image you can see the details of the wings inside the chrysalis. When emerging, the butterfly uses a liquid, sometimes called cocoonase, which softens the shell of the chrysalis.

Having emerged from the chrysalis, the butterfly will usually sit on the empty shell or another vertical surface to rest upon and harden its wings.
